The Owls Suffer 12-Point Deduction After Entering Administration

Sheffield Wednesday supporters described Wednesday as “one of the most bittersweet days in our 158-year history” following the team entered financial administration by owner Dejphon Chansiri and deducted 12 points.

Club Crisis Results in Points Penalty

Sheffield Wednesday are confronted with almost certain relegation following the EFL’s penalty left them on -6 points, 15 points from safety. Players and staff have not been paid on time over recent months, compounding the period of turbulence.

The appointed administrators are now in charge of the process aiming to sell club assets, along with the team's home ground, to settle outstanding debts including tax liabilities. Shortly after the administration announcement, stadium seating with the owner's name were removed from the North Stand.

“Administration resulted from prolonged financial issues, poor oversight, and repeated failures to engage credible buyers stated the supporters' trust. “Administration is not something to be celebrated. It needn’t have ended this way. But we're relieved the owner has departed.”

Manager’s Perspective on Fresh Start

Wednesday’s manager, Henrik Pedersen met the administrators with team members and employees on Friday morning. Pedersen stated administration was required to embark on a new era.

The manager emphasized “a sad situation can also still be a good day”, noting: “Recent months showed the situation was unsustainable. We need a fresh restart to use the potential of this fantastic club. Now optimism and hope for brighter days prevail. When I close my eyes, I can see a bright future for Sheffield Wednesday

Staff Insecurity

Employees expressed emotion at the news, as the manager explained: “There is insecurity. Will wages be paid? What comes next? Will things improve? Or won't they? Overall, there's hope for a shared future with the club.”

Continuing Money Problems

The club's condition has been deteriorating sharply in recent months when the manager Danny Röhl and several key players departed due to salary delays. The league voiced worries about the club’s finances in August.

From that point, Wednesday operated with minimal funds, applying all revenue including league payments to address liabilities. Facing potential closure orders by tax authorities, it appears Chansiri ran out of options.

Insolvency Practitioner's Comments

Kris Wigfield, one of three joint-administrators appointed by Begbies Traynor said: “Like many football clubs, [Wednesday] has been trading at a significant loss for several years, with those losses historically funded by the former owner Mr Chansiri. Because of mounting money troubles, the owner has chosen to place the club into administration allowing us to sell the club and ground together, which is great news for supporters.”

Regulatory Response

The culture secretary, Lisa Nandy said Wednesday’s plight served as another reminder of the need for the independent football regulator, recently legislated. The regulator is expected to be in operation by the 2027-28 campaign.

“My club Wigan faced similar issues, so I understand fans want a quick solution,” she added.

Fan Response

Wednesday fans have boycotted the club’s retail and merchandise in recent months and thousands stayed away from their home fixture against Middlesbrough as part of ongoing protests. Ahead of the Oxford game, officials urged fans to return.

“Stability and revenue are critical now, the trust said. The phase of resistance has achieved its goal – now begins the phase of renewal. Each purchase and visit supports recovery. Real change is within our grasp – but only if we are prepared to seize it. Now is the time to be Wednesday

What Lies Ahead

The trust anticipates buyer interest while developing a “fan-led takeover proposal” guaranteeing “liquidation remains off the table”.

Pedersen, previously assistant to Röhl, said he was not resigned to relegation despite the severity of the challenge. “We have to be a new Sheffield Wednesday with an old heart, he stated. We have a fantastic club and it deserves to grow. I'm confident we can stay up. The fight continues.”
