The ice cream brand's Founding Partner States Parent Company Prevented Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben and Jerry's has announced that corporate owner Unilever prevented the launch for a new Palestine-themed ice cream flavor.
Ben Cohen, who established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he will personally create this new product within a personal series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's was barred from addressing publicly.
Longstanding Dispute Between Founders versus Corporate Owner
The recent development deepens the ongoing tension between the world-famous dessert company and its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant which has owned Ben & Jerry's for over two decades.
Both founders have asserted that Unilever along with its ice cream arm the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem for Solidarity
The entrepreneur revealed via an Instagram video how he's developing a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for public suggestions regarding the product's name plus additional components.
“I'm accomplishing what they were prevented from doing,” Mr. Cohen stated in his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
The watermelon has become a symbol of support for Palestinians because of its coloration, which match those of Palestine's national banner – the distinctive four-color pattern.
Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories under Israeli control, leading to the parent company selling their Israel business to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.
The new dessert series will be developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company which was first created in 2016 for endorsing ex- US presidential candidate Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Leadership Changes plus Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated how he will create additional ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
This development comes after co-founder Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at the company recently, after decades of involvement, mentioning concerns regarding how its independence was undermined after Unilever's decision to restrict its social activism.
At that time, Ben Cohen commented that “My partner has a really big heart and this conflict with our parent company was deeply distressing him."
“My conscience compels me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for its independence so that the company can actualise its ethical purpose, the principles that established its foundation while upholding for decades," he explained to media outlets.
