The Fashion Icon Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has sadly died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's seminal music video for "Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
Price's death comes shortly after he debuted his most recent collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. Singer Lily Allen showcased a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "revenge dress" once worn by Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show was launched by looks from model Jerry Hall, who later wore the marriage dress Price specifically designed for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.
Partnerships with Stars
A frequent collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the artist wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge tailoring for all genders along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.
In the 1990s, he started creating pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included a number of outfits for her American tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in partnership with the design house 16Arlington.
