New York Jets Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn described that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “in good spirits” during a recent discussion.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that his mood is upbeat,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and his kid, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he has been listed as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. And again, that reassures me, because of his outlook and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD released security footage Monday of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack remains under investigation and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The attack took place just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, 29, was taken to a local hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “a great deal” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a newborn.
“My initial concern, he recently became a father,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd was inactive during the current season, his debut year with New York, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder issue that required surgery.
He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was projected as an important component of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during preseason drills on 2 August and was carted from the field.
Boyd has remained around the team throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn said. “In fact, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he has excelled at supporting his teammates.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, began his career with the Vikings after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He later played for Arizona in last year and later was with the Texans subsequently. Boyd inked a single-season agreement worth $1.6m with the Jets in March.
