New Year's Revelers Urged to Wrap Up Warm with Snow Forecast Across the UK
Forecasters are reporting a chilly commencement to the new year, with snow anticipated over large parts of the UK. Celebrants have been told to dress warmly as bitterly cold temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Festive Plans Continue In Spite of Warnings
The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay events are set to take place, unlike last year's calling-off. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," noted the national forecaster.
Displays Under Clear but Cold Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks shows, with no rain and open skies. Temperatures are forecast to be low, making extra layers a necessity, according to forecasters.
In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Widespread Advisories for Friday
Heading into Friday, weather warnings are in place across Northern Ireland and from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

- Delays and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.
Temperatures Expected to Plummet Further
As 2026 begins, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to fall even more as snowfall and high winds are likely to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is forecast to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Public Health Alerts Issued
Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to stay active until noon on 5 January, with the mercury forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials said this indicated the weather was expected to lead to significant impacts across the NHS and care systems. This encompasses a expected uptick in the fatality numbers among vulnerable individuals or those 65 and older.
