Italy's Consumer Group Criticizes Lift Ticket Cost Increases as Totally Unreasonable
A leading Italian consumer association are sounding the alarm over what they call completely unjustified price increases for ski passes this winter season, cautioning that skiing could become an exclusive privilege for affluent individuals.
Significant Cost Rises Across Italy
From the majestic Alps and breathtaking Dolomites in the northern areas to the slopes of Abruzzo, prices are poised to increase by up to 40% compared to 2021 levels, according to fresh research.
The popular Dolomiti Superski ticket, which grants access to all 12 resorts in the premium Dolomite area, will now set visitors back €86 per day this season. In Roccaraso, a daily ski pass is projected to hit €60, after experiencing substantial visitor surges last season.
Annual Ticket Prices and Supplementary Charges
Meanwhile, annual skiing tickets will range from €755 per adult in Roccaraso to as much as €1,800 in the Aosta valley.
The expense of hiring winter sports gear has also increased, along with lodging costs and restaurant prices throughout alpine destinations.
Watchdog Leader Cites Unjustified Increases
Gabriele Melluso, heading the watchdog organization, stated that the price increases—which operators blame on higher energy costs, resort maintenance, and demand for better equipment—were entirely unreasonable and unacceptable.
"Particularly since inflation in Italy are under control and energy tariffs, which had raised operational costs for ski resort operators in 2022, have returned to normal," Melluso noted.
He added that prices have climbed to points where budget-conscious visitors are being compelled to skip their traditional settimana bianca, or ski holiday, altogether.
Tourism Decline and Broader Context
He noted a sharp decline in alpine visitors during the 2024-2025 season, with 1 million fewer Italians visiting ski resorts compared to the previous year due to rising costs.
Despite these increases, Italy remains a cheaper option for skiing enthusiasts in the European region compared to neighboring Switzerland, French destinations, and Austria.
International Event Background
The growing concern over winter sports expenses comes as the country prepares to host the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics between February 6 and 22. Italy's foreign minister, the foreign affairs official, announced on Friday that Italy had submitted a proposal to the United Nations urging a "worldwide ceasefire" during the international event.
"With Milan Cortina we must similarly convey a peaceful communication and conversation... to halt conflicts during the Games," Tajani emphasized.
