Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terror Attack
A minimum of 16 lives lost their lives and more than 40 were hurt when attackers opened fire at a Hanukah gathering at Bondi Beach, a tragedy Australian police are describing as a act of terrorism.
According to the most recent information, officials have announced the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 wounded individuals were taken to hospital.
The victims are still awaiting formally identified, but police believe their ages range between 10 and 87 years old.
Below are the individuals who have been identified to date.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.
She described the moments leading up to the shooting, explaining they were standing when the gunfire began. “He moved to protect me because he wanted to stay near me,” she recalled.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having faced immense hardship in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.
Officially, a senior official declared that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This low act is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement continued.
One Child
A child who was rushed to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, police have confirmed.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, as per multiple sources citing the Israeli government.
Those Injured
Of the 42 people transported to hospital, many are still under care, with a number in a critical state. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the gunmen. Hailed as a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is recovering well in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he survived.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the attack. He described he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
