A prominent South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country battling persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the city centre on a Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the 40-year-old entertainer was approached by three individuals, one of whom shot at him before escaping on foot.

The purpose of the incident remains unclear and no suspects have been apprehended are in custody, according to authorities.

How It Happened

Authorities indicated that Stock was ambushed as he was exiting a premises close to the city center landmark.

He had been present for hours at the building supervising the installation of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by unknown people, according to reports.

"Authorities believe the deceased was confronted by three unidentified men after he parked his car, and they shot at him before escaping on foot," authorities stated.

Surveillance tape reportedly captured a suspect with dreadlocks and clad in what resembled a guard's attire shooting on Stock before running away.

The DJ sought to escape after he was hit but fell down across the street.

Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the assault.
