The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.
