Based on fresh findings, cabinet members met with delegates from the fossil fuel industry over 500 times during their initial year in office – equivalent to two times each working day.

Marked Uptick Compared to Prior Leadership

The analysis showed that fossil fuel lobbyists were participating in 48% more government meetings under the current government's opening year relative to the year before.

Officials justified the discussions, stating that representatives engaged with a wide range of agents from "energy sector, unions and community groups to propel our clean energy superpower mission".

Rising Worries About Sector Pressure

However, the discoveries have caused alarm among analysts about the extent of the fossil fuel industry's influence over officials at a period when ministers are working to reduce costs and shift to a greener energy infrastructure.

Key Findings

The study, which is based on the official public documentation of government discussions, further discovered:

• Officials at the Net Zero Ministry met with petroleum sector advocates 274 times, with sector representatives present at approximately one-fourth of meetings.

• The climate official engaged with oil industry representatives 250 times – with a third of each discussion featuring corporate delegates.

• In the equivalent duration department ministers held meetings with trade union representatives 61 times.

• Three leading petroleum firms met with representatives 100 times between them.

• Oil industry representatives were present at almost every government meeting about the windfall tax, a temporary charge on the "extraordinary profits" of North Sea energy corporations.

Party Statements

An environmental politician commented: "Rather than heeding experts, populations affected by flooding, or guardians anxious to guarantee a secure tomorrow for their future generations, this leadership is emphasizing lobbyists and revenues for major petroleum companies."

Official Denial

The government asserted the findings were "deceptive", saying several of the companies mentioned also had sustainable power initiatives and that these were often the primary subject of the meetings.

"Our primary objective is a fair, organized and thriving change in the marine area in compliance with our ecological and regulatory requirements, and we are working with the sector to preserve current and future generations of good jobs."

Global Background

Various leading fossil fuel corporations have been censured for reducing their green investments in recent years amid a global pushback against ecological initiatives.

An activist coordinator from an environmental law organization commented: "Officials vowed a public-serving administration, but that isn't equivalent to bowing the knee to businesses profiting out of climate catastrophe. It's time to cease favoring environmental offenders and prioritize citizens."
